Gerry Matheny - Owner and Chief Pilot
Gerry has had a varied flight and professional career. First, he was a U.S. Army helicopter pilot, became a prosecuting attorney and now, commercial helicopter pilot and flight instructor.
After graduating from flight school in 1977, he flew sensitive military missions in mountainous terrain near the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North Korea and South Korea, as well as tactical training missions in the active Army, Texas Army National Guard and Army Reserves in and around Ft. Hood, Texas and throughout other regions of the United States. These missions also required application of "civilian" aviation flight skills in the FAA Air Traffic Control environment.
Flying the UH-1H Iroquois "Huey", OH-58A Kiowa and AH-1S "Cobra" helicopters, his missions were flown at (and below) treetop level, a type of flying known as nap-of-the-earth (NOE) flight under night vision goggle (NVG) and unaided night vision conditions in all weather environments. Gerry's military flight experience gained him the Senior Army Aviator badge.
Early in his military career as an Army Aviator, he met his wife, Joy, while stationed at Ft. Hood and has been happily married since 1979. Gerry retired in 1995 to the Retired Reserve.
Gerry earned a BA degree from the University of Texas - Austin in 1986, and a Juris Doctor degree from St. Mary's School of Law in San Antonio in 1990. He practiced law as an Assistant District Attorney with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office in San Antonio until his strong desire to return fulltime to his "first love" of flying helicopters. After obtaining his Certified Flight Instructor - Helicopter Certificate, he retired from the DA's office in 2008.
He has the following Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificates and ratings:
- Advanced Ground Instructor
- Certified Flight Instructor - Helicopter
- Commercial Pilot - Helicopter with Instrument Rating - Helicopter
- Private Pilot - Airplane - Single Engine Land
